According to Mintel, pet insurer Petplan has revealed that approximately 5% of new UK pet owners have been offered the opportunity by their employer to take time off of work to care for their pets. Businesses in the UK are following suit. According to Mintel’s report Britain’s Pet Owners UK 2015, nearly one in five pet owners have stayed at home with a sick pet or have missed work to take care of a pet.
One company with a “pawternity” policy is BitSol Solutions, a tech-support business based in Manchester. The owner states that staff with a new pet are able to take up to one week of paid leave. On the other side, Shoppers Drug Mart is a Canadian company offering time off to employees suffering from the loss of a pet.
